Understand the schedule before choosing a code.

A text match is only a starting point. Accurate tariff classification also depends on product facts, the legal hierarchy of the schedule, section and chapter notes, and relevant customs guidance.

MarkIt provides this lookup as a research reference. For authoritative tariff text, amendments, and official notices, consult the U.S. International Trade Commission.

What is an HTS code?

An HTS code is a 10-digit classification number used for goods imported into the United States. The code identifies the product and helps determine its tariff treatment, duty rate, reporting requirements, and any special provisions that may apply.

What is the difference between an HS code and an HTS code?

The Harmonized System, or HS, provides the first six digits used internationally. The United States extends that structure to 10 digits in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, or HTS, to define U.S. tariff lines and statistical reporting categories.

How do I look up an HTS code?

Search by a product description or known code, then review the surrounding headings, subheadings, section notes, chapter notes, duty rates, and relevant customs guidance. Product composition, principal function, construction, and intended use can all affect the final classification.

Is the MarkIt HTS lookup free?

Yes. MarkIt provides free access to search and browse the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule without an account. The lookup is a research reference and does not replace a binding ruling or professional advice for a specific import transaction.
